• US 8 / 5mm 16″ circular and DPNs (or size to obtain gauge)

With MC, and using circular needles, cast on 72, 78 (84, 90) stitches. Place a stitch marker to indicate the beginning/end of each round.

Rounds 1 – 3: knit all the way around

For sizes 1 and 3 only:
Round 4: *k 6, – (7, – ), m1, repeat from * to end of round | 84, – (96, -)

For sizes 2 and 4 only:
Round 4: *k – , 6 ( – , 7), m1, k – , 7 ( – , 8), m1, repeat from * to end of round | – , 90 ( – , 102)

For all sizes:
Rounds 5 – 7: knit all the way around

body

Switch to CC1. Knit for 28, 30 (32, 34) rounds, or until hat just covers your ears.

crown

Place 6 stitch markers 14, 15 (16, 17) stitches apart (creating 6 segments).

Round 1: *k2tog, k to marker, SM, repeat from * to 2 st before end of round, ssk, SM | 77, 83 (89, 95)
Round 2: *k to 2 st before marker, ssk, SM, repeat from * to final segment, k to end of round, SM | 72, 78 (84, 90)

Repeat Rounds 1 – 2 4, 4 (5, 5) more times. You should have 24, 30 (24, 30) stitches left on your needles.

For sizes 1 and 3:
Switch to CC2. Repeat Rounds 1 – 2 one more time.

Next Round: *k2tog, SM, repeat from * to end of round | 6, – (6, – )

For sizes 2 and 4:
Repeat Round 1. Switch to CC2. Repeat Round 2; repeat Round 1 one more time.

Next Round: *ssk, SM, repeat from * to final segment, k1 | – , 6 ( – , 6)

For all sizes:
Using a darning needle, thread the yarn through the remaining 6 stitches and secure the end.
Weave in ends.

colorwork

Block your knitting before beginning the colorwork section.

Using CC2, begin the duplicate stitches, following these steps (also available in chart form!):

• Starting at the back of your hat, work the duplicate stitch over 2 complete rounds, exactly 2 rounds above the bottom of the CC1 section of the hat body.
• Find any column of stitches where you have a clear path from the 2 duplicate stitch rounds you just worked, all the way up to the top of the CC1 section (i.e. you don’t encounter any decreases). Place a stitch marker at the base of this column.
• Place a stitch marker on this same round, 14, 15 (16, 17) stitches away from the one you just placed.
• Repeat this step until you have placed a total of 6 stitch markers.
• Starting from 4 stitches to the left of one stitch marker, work 9 duplicate stitches on the round above, left to right.
• On the round above, starting 2 stitches to the left of where you just left off, work 5 duplicate stitches, right to left.
• On the round above, starting 1 stitch to the right of where you just left off, work 3 duplicate stitches, left to right.
• On the round above, work 3 duplicate stitches from right to left, directly above the 3 you just worked.
• On the round above, work 3 duplicate stitches from left to right, directly above the 3 you just worked.
• On the round above, starting 1 stitch to the left of where you just left off, work 1 duplicate stitch.
• Continue working 1 duplicate stitch directly above the previous one, until you reach the very top of the CC1 section.

You will end up with 6 citrus segments! Weave in all ends, and you may find that the hat requires a second blocking after the duplicate stitches.
