Cast on enough stitches for the length of the leaf (excluding the stem). Knit back and forth in short rows until your leaf has the desired fan-like shape. Working longer short rows will add width across the full length of the leaf, while shorter short rows will add width to just the top portion. You’ll want to vary and randomize the length of the short rows to achieve a fluid look to the leaf.
NOTE: When working in garter stitch, there is no need to knit wraps with wrapped stitches.
To create a “notch” at the top of a leaf, work in short rows until the leaf is approximately half as wide as you’d like (or to wherever you want to place the notch). Starting from the edge of the leaf, bind off enough stitches for the length of the notch, and knit a few more stitches until you work the wrap & turn of the short row. Then, cast on the same number of stitches you bound off on the previous row. Continue on as normal for the remainder of the leaf.
When you’re satisfied with the width and shape of your leaf, work your final row by knitting all the way across to the base of the leaf. Then, pick up 1 or 2 stitches from the end and work an i-cord to create the stem.
Weave in ends and block.
