a simple pattern for a useful blanket!
NOTE: This is a revised version of a pattern I wrote a few years ago. My blanket sample matches the old pattern, so there are some slight discrepancies in the hexagons (specifically, the location of the end of round). The new version is way better though!!

- A whole lot of a worsted weight yarn. I used approximately 3 skeins of Lion Brand Fisherman’s Wool Natural for the MC, and about 1.5 skeins of Lion Brand Fisherman’s Wool Brown Heather for the CC. (Honestly, this was not the best yarn choice for the project–it’s itchy! Love this yarn for other things though.)
- US H8 / 5mm crochet hook

Create a magic loop.
Round 1: Ch2 (does NOT count as dc here and throughout), [ch2, dc2 into magic loop] 6 times, join with sl st in top of first chsp. | 12 dc, 6 chsp]
Round 2: Ch 2, [ch2, dc into chsp, dc in top of each st on previous round up to next chsp, dc into chsp] 6 times, join with sl st in top of first chsp. | 12 dc inc’d (2 dc inc’d per side)
Repeat Round 2 four more times. | 6 total rounds, 72 dc (12 dc per side), 6 chsp
Round 3: Ch 1 (does NOT count as sc here and throughout), [sc2 into chsp, sc12] 6 times, join with sl st in top of first st. | 84 sc
Round 4: Ch 1, [3sc in next st, sc13] 6 times, join with sl st in top of first st. | 96 sc (16 sc per edge)
Make as many hexagons as you want! I made 54 total hexagons: 46 in the MC, switching to the CC for Round 4, and 8 in the CC entirely.
joining
Optional: Block your hexagons before joining them together!
Lay out your hexagons however you like. With the CC, and working with the wrong side facing you, sc the front loop of each edge stitch together with the front loop of the corresponding edge stitch in the adjacent hexagon (since you’re working on the wrong side of the blanket, the “front loops” become the back loops when the blanket is right-side-up). Keep going until you’ve joined all the hexagons together!

Turn work so right side is facing you again.
Round 1: With CC, join yarn in back loop of any convex corner st and ch1 (does NOT count as sc), [ch2, sc tbl] in same st, sc tbl in top of each st on previous round (Round 4 of Hexagon). At each convex corner, [sc tbl, ch2, sc tbl] in same stitch; at each concave corner, [sc2tog tbl] 2 times. At end of round, sc tbl in initial st (where you joined yarn), join round with sl st in top of first chsp.
Round 2: Ch2 (does NOT count as dc), [ch 2, dc] in same st, dc in top of each st on previous round. At each chsp (convex corner), [dc, ch2, dc] into chsp; at each concave corner, [dc2tog] 2 times. At end of round, dc in initial st, join with sl st in top of first chsp.
Repeat Round 2 until border is as wide as you’d like. I only worked Round 2 one more time.
Round 3: With MC, ch1 (does NOT count as sc), sc3 into chsp, sc in top of each st on previous round. At each chsp (convex corner), sc3 into chsp; at each concave corner, sc2tog twice. At end of round, join with sl st in top of first st.
